Ankle Brachial Index (ABI)
Accurate Peripheral Artery Disease Detection at EPIC Heart & Vascular Center
At EPIC Heart & Vascular Center, we offer expert Ankle Brachial Index (ABI) testing near you to detect and assess Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD) quickly and effectively. Our board-certified vascular specialists use this non-invasive test to compare blood pressure in your arms and ankles—helping identify reduced blood flow in the legs and potential blockages.
What Is an ABI Test?
The Ankle Brachial Index (ABI) is a safe, painless diagnostic test that measures the ratio of blood pressure in the ankle compared to the arm. A lower ABI reading indicates poor circulation, often caused by narrowed or blocked arteries in the legs—a common sign of PAD. Early diagnosis helps prevent complications like leg pain, ulcers, or even limb loss.
Common Reasons for an ABI Test:
-
Leg pain while walking (claudication)
-
Coldness or numbness in the legs/feet
-
Slow or non-healing wounds on the feet
-
Weak or absent pulses in the legs
-
Discoloration or shiny skin on lower limbs
-
Routine vascular screening for at-risk patients
How the ABI Test Works
During the procedure, blood pressure cuffs are placed on your arms and ankles. A small ultrasound device called a Doppler is used to listen to blood flow. The test typically takes 10–15 minutes, is completely non-invasive, and provides instant results. Our vascular team evaluates the ABI score to determine if PAD is present and how severe it may be.
