Peripheral Vascular Intervention
Advanced Limb-Saving Vascular Care at EPIC Heart & Vascular Center
At EPIC Heart & Vascular Center, we offer expert Peripheral Vascular Intervention near you to diagnose and treat blockages in arteries outside the heart, especially in the legs. Our board-certified vascular specialists use cutting-edge techniques to restore blood flow, relieve symptoms, and help prevent limb loss due to peripheral artery disease (PAD).
What Is Peripheral Vascular Intervention?
Peripheral Vascular Intervention (PVI) is a minimally invasive procedure used to open narrowed or blocked arteries in the legs, arms, or other peripheral areas. It’s an essential treatment for patients with PAD, which can cause pain, cramping, numbness, non-healing wounds, or even the risk of amputation. This procedure often involves angioplasty, stenting, or atherectomy to remove plaque and improve circulation.
Common Reasons for a Peripheral Vascular Intervention:
-
Leg pain while walking (claudication)
-
Non-healing foot or leg wounds
-
Coldness or discoloration in extremities
-
Numbness, tingling, or weakness in legs
-
Diabetic vascular complications
-
Poor blood flow due to smoking, high cholesterol, or hypertension
How the Procedure Works
Peripheral Vascular Intervention is performed through a tiny incision, usually in the groin or wrist. A catheter is guided into the affected artery under imaging, and a balloon is inflated to open the narrowed area. In many cases, a stent is placed to keep the artery open. In some cases, plaque removal devices (atherectomy) are used. The procedure typically lasts 1–2 hours, and patients can often go home the same day.
