What Is Carotid Angiography & Angioplasty?
Carotid Angiography is a diagnostic imaging test that uses contrast dye and X-rays to visualize the carotid arteries in the neck that supply blood to the brain. If significant narrowing (stenosis) is found, Carotid Angioplasty may be performed — a procedure where a small balloon is used to open the narrowed artery, and often a stent is placed to keep it open.

How the Procedure Works
Carotid angiography is usually done under local anesthesia. A thin catheter is inserted into an artery, typically in the groin or arm, and guided to the carotid arteries. A contrast dye is then injected, and real-time X-ray images are taken. If narrowing is detected, angioplasty with stenting may be performed during the same procedure. The entire process typically takes 1–2 hours, and patients may return home the same day or stay overnight for observation.
