PFO Closure
Expert Patent Foramen Ovale (PFO) Treatment at EPIC Heart & Vascular Center
At EPIC Heart & Vascular Center, we offer expert PFO (Patent Foramen Ovale) Closure procedures near you to reduce the risk of stroke and other complications associated with this common congenital heart condition. Our board-certified cardiologists use minimally invasive techniques to safely and effectively close the opening in the heart, restoring optimal circulation and preventing abnormal blood flow between the heart chambers.
What Is a PFO Closure?
A Patent Foramen Ovale (PFO) is a small hole between the left and right upper chambers of the heart that fails to close naturally after birth. While many people with a PFO never experience symptoms, in some cases it can allow blood clots to bypass the lungs and travel to the brain, increasing the risk of stroke. A PFO Closure is a catheter-based procedure that seals this opening using a specially designed closure device, eliminating the abnormal blood flow and reducing future risks.
Common Reasons for a PFO Closure:
-
History of cryptogenic (unexplained) stroke
-
Migraine with aura in select patients
-
Diagnosed PFO via echocardiogram or bubble test
-
Risk of systemic embolism
-
Family history of cardiac structural defects
How the PFO Closure Procedure Works
During the procedure, a catheter is inserted through a vein in the groin and guided to the heart. A small closure device is delivered through the catheter and positioned over the PFO. Once in place, the device expands to seal the hole. The procedure typically takes about 1 hour and is performed under conscious sedation or general anesthesia. Most patients return home the same day or the next, with minimal recovery time.
