Observership Experience

Ashraf Ullah

Working as a clinical extern introduced me to the US health system, its multidisciplinary clinical practice, evidence-based learning, patient counseling, and safety protocols. I learned EMR, honed my history taking and physical examination skills, formulated management plans for common cardiovascular conditions, including hypertension, chronic heart failure, obstructive sleep apnea, and atrial fibrillation.

The experience enhanced my problem-solving abilities, helped me understand the crux of medicine. I learned the importance of diversity and inclusivity in patient centered care.

Overall, it made me realize how multidisciplinary quality care teams can improve life expectancy and reduce morbidity by utilizing cutting-edge and innovative healthcare technology. My understanding of EKG and echocardiograms got amplified.

One of the pearls of this rotation was getting my knowledge updated with current treatment guidelines for cardiac conditions. Being a part of active discussion on a variety of clinical cases with my preceptor regarding assessment/management plan helped me in integrating my clinical knowledge.
