During my remarkable clinical rotation at HCA Houston Healthcare, Northwest, and the Epic Heart and Vascular Center, I had the privilege to learn directly from the exceptional Dr. Usman Khan. This experience has profoundly shaped my journey as a medical professional, allowing me to witness the heart of cardiovascular care under his expert guidance.

From the very outset, Dr. Khan’s approach to mentorship stood out. He took the time to engage in one-on-one conversations, delving into our expectations, life stories, and aspirations. This personalized touch immediately instilled a sense of belonging and trust, setting the tone for an immersive learning experience.

Working closely with Dr. Khan, I gained hands-on exposure to an array of cardiovascular procedures. Witnessing angiography procedures at Houston Methodist Hospital left an indelible mark on me. The precision, the interplay of medical teams, and the gravity of each step deepened my respect for the field. I recall being part of discussions around stent placements, where Dr. Khan seamlessly wove anecdotes and mentorship lessons to enhance our understanding.

One of the most impactful aspects of my time with Dr. Khan was his dedication to teaching and fostering a collaborative environment. During clinic days, I was entrusted with patient histories, observing physical examinations, and the intricate task of discussing management. The experience of connecting with Spanish-speaking patients using translation apps was a rewarding challenge that Dr. Khan encouraged me to undertake. It not only broke the ice but also highlighted the importance of effective communication in patient care.

Dr. Khan’s commitment to scholarly pursuits was infectious. I presented research on the management of chronic mitral regurgitation, a topic that sparked engaging discussions among peers. His feedback on my presentation of the meta-analysis study on the safety of non-vitamin K antagonist oral anticoagulants in elderly patients with atrial fibrillation further boosted my confidence and reinforced the value of research-driven practice.

The opportunity to observe and learn about diverse procedures like venous ablation, coronary angiography, and stenting significantly broadened my horizons. Dr. Khan’s willingness to explain not just the “how” but also the “why” behind each step cultivated a deeper understanding of the clinical nuances. These experiences solidified my passion for cardiology and motivated me to explore specialized areas within the field.

However, my time with Dr. Khan wasn’t solely confined to clinical practice. His emphasis on ethical considerations, patient autonomy, and compassionate care left a lasting impression. His mentorship extended beyond medicine, as he readily provided career advice and insights into the future of interventional cardiology.

Reflecting on this journey, I’m filled with gratitude for the comprehensive exposure and growth I’ve experienced. Dr. Khan’s mentorship and the camaraderie among the medical team enriched my outlook on medicine. The hands-on experience, personalized guidance, and discussions around complex cases have undoubtedly prepared me for a successful medical career. This rotation has not only augmented my clinical competence but has also ignited a deeper purpose in me—to provide patient-centric care in the most ethical and informed manner possible.
