I had the privilege of completing a month-long externship under the guidance of Dr. Khan at Epic Heart and Vascular Clinic. Dr. Khan is not only a renowned interventional cardiologist but also an exceptional mentor who employs unique teaching methods tailored to the specific needs and aspirations of each individual.
During this period, I had the opportunity to observe a diverse range of cases and cardiovascular procedures, including Venaseal, Varithena, Radiofrequency thermal ablation of varicose veins, Cardiac Catheterization for CAD, and atherectomy for PAD.
As an observer, I was actively encouraged to become proficient in using Electronic Medical Records (EMR). I interacted with patients in both inpatient and outpatient settings, participating in case presentations and discussions. Additionally, I collaborated on updating patients’ assessment and management plans using EMR under Dr. Khan’s expert guidance. Furthermore, Dr. Khan motivated students to engage in weekly presentations covering the latest guidelines from the 2020 ACC/AHA. Consequently, I delivered a presentation on the clinicals and management of patients with mixed valve diseases.
Furthermore, this rotation provided ample opportunities to observe and gain insights into nuclear stress scans, Echocardiography, carotid Doppler, as well as arterial and venous duplex scans. The clinic’s supportive environment fostered a sense of teamwork and collaboration among all team members. Dr. Khan consistently offered me valuable insights and provided the necessary resources to make informed career decisions while allowing me the freedom to explore. His support was invaluable, and I genuinely relished the learning experience under his mentorship.
In conclusion, this experience was a pivotal learning opportunity that significantly enhanced my confidence in navigating the American healthcare system.
