My transformative 4-week semi hands on rotation at the Epic Heart and Vascular Outpatient Clinic within the renowned Texas Medical Center in Houston, under the mentorship of Dr. Usman, was a riveting journey of cardiovascular care.
On our first day, Dr Khan had a one on one discussion with every observer to listen to their expectations. That conversation gave me confidence to share every question that I had in my mind . Later on , witnessing the orchestration of diagnostics, consultations, and treatments within that center was awe-inspiring. Dr. Usman’s adeptness in tailoring treatment plans to individual patient profiles showcased his expertise in this field. I got to understand and learn the Electronic Medical Record (EMR) system for the very first time there. The clinic’s collaborative atmosphere fostered a thriving environment leaving an unforgettable impression on my approach to holistic patient care. The experience of observing the angiography procedures in one of the best hospitals ‘ Houston Methodist Hospital ‘ was so inspiring and motivating for me to be such a physician one day.
Furthermore, the exposure to an array of cardiovascular pathologies such as arrhythmias, MI, Carotid artery stenosis, varicose veins expanded my clinical acumen. Engaging with patients and understanding the nuances of their medical histories provided a unique point into the intricacies of disease progression and management. I learned the details of the different procedures like varithena , venaseal , Echocardiography, and carotid ultrasound every other day during my rotation. One of the unique cases i remembered i saw was of Leriche syndrome that I just had read in my course books. At the end of rotation , Dr Khan arranged an EKG class where he himself taught us the diagnostic approach to solve the EKGs.
Reflecting on this experience, I am not only grateful for the depth of knowledge I acquired but also for the ethical considerations that Dr. Usman consistently upheld. His dedication to informed consent, patient autonomy, and medical ethics served as a compass guiding me. During our scholarly discussion sessions, I listened to the presentation of my peers where everybody would present the latest clinical trends in the field of cardiovascular care. Dr Khan’s remarks that he really liked my topic when I presented a meta analysis study ” Safety and efficacy of non-vitamin K antagonist oral anticoagulants in elderly patients with atrial fibrillation ” was an icing on the cake.
In conclusion, my rotation with Dr. Usman at Epic Heart and Vascular not only augmented my clinical competence but also kindled a sense of purpose in providing patient-centric care. This exposure to excellence in outpatient cardiovascular practice within the Texas Medical Center has undoubtedly left a mark on my journey as a medical professional.
