I am delighted to share my testimonial for my month long externship (May 2023) at HCA Houston Northwest Hospital and Epic Heart and Vascular clinic, where I had the privilege of working alongside the esteemed Dr. Usman Khan. This rotation has been an exceptional experience that has significantly enriched my medical education in numerous ways.

During my rotation, I was exposed to a wide range of complex cardiovascular cases, including procedures such as Varithena, Venaseal, and venous ablation. These procedures allowed me to witness first hand advanced techniques used in the treatment of venous diseases. In addition to outpatient procedures, I had the opportunity to observe inpatient procedures as well.

Cardiac catheterization was a common occurrence during my rotation. I also witnessed the placement of intra-aortic balloon pumps, a life- saving intervention for patients with severe cardiac conditions. The exposure to above procedures has expanded my knowledge in cardiovascular medicine.

I was also fortunate to be a part of Dr. Khan’s inpatient hospital rounds. These rounds provided a comprehensive understanding of patient management and the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration.

Dr. Khan’s expertise and dedication in teaching EKG interpretation and nuclear cardiac studies were truly remarkable. He fostered an environment that encouraged active participation and critical thinking. Under his guidance, I had the opportunity to witness and participate in the interpretation of EKGs, learning to analyze and identify various cardiac abnormalities.

One particular highlight of my rotation was the opportunity to give a presentation on the “Impact of Age and Sex on Left Ventricular Remodeling in Patients with Aortic Regurgitation” from the Journal of the American College of Cardiology (JACC). Dr. Khan recognized the effort and dedication I put into researching and preparing my presentation. He commended my ability to effectively analyze and summarize complex scientific literature, and he appreciated my thorough understanding of the subject matter.

During my rotation I was able to gain comprehensive knowledge in navigating and utilizing the EMR systems (Patient Keeper and eClinic Works) at the Heart and Vascular Institute. Throughout Dr. Khan emphasized the significance of accurate and efficient documentation within the EMR. Through his guidance, I learned how to use the EMR system. Dr. Khan recognized and appreciated my ability to document patient encounters accurately and efficiently using the EMR. His appreciation for my note-taking skills validated my attention to detail and his guidance and constructive criticism helped me improve my documentation skills.

Furthermore, Dr. Khan acknowledged my ability to interact with his staff and patients in a positive and effective manner. He praised my interpersonal skills, empathy, and ability to communicate clearly and compassionately.

I wholeheartedly recommend Dr. Khan and the entire team at HCA Houston Northwest and Epic Heart and Vascular Institute to any aspiring medical professional seeking an exceptional learning experience. Their commitment to excellence, patient care, and education is truly commendable, and I am grateful for the opportunity to have been a part of their team.
