I had my elective in may 2023 under the great mentor Dr. M Usman Khan, who is very professional in his field. He is very dedicated to his students and has an astonishing clinical skills.
He asked us our expectations from the rotation and what our goals are. I got along with the team very well, which was more than heart-welcoming.

We had weekly student presentations on the latest guidelines and journal clubs to discuss novel research. I had the opportunity to present case reports. I presented on newly published article in JACC “Health status and clinical outcomes in older adults with chronic coronary disease” on which Dr. Khan praised and appreciated on presenting the topic in an interesting way.

The way Dr Khan taught us EKG was beyond our expectations. The rapid answers and teachings from Dr Khan made us prepare to know every basic aspect of EKG. Same is the case with Echo and stress testing.

I learned how to do clinical reasoning and improve my diagnostic abilities, accurately assessing cardiac conditions and formulating appropriate treatment plans. I had a one on one interaction with the patients.

The nurse practitioners working under Dr.khan were very co operative. The team works in a systemic manner and everything was upto the mark.

I also got the chance to observe many cardiovascular procedures like cardiac catheterization and had the chance to see and learn about stress testing, echocardiography, carotid doppler, arterial, and venous duplex scans. I observed a variety of chronic venous insufficiency treatment methods, including radiofrequency thermal ablation, venaseal and varithena. I have also seen inserting linked implanter and cardiac telemetry procedures.

I was able to learn how to develop strong rapport with patients, establishing trust and creating a comfortable environment for open communication.

The encouragement and constructive criticism I received during my experience at Epic Heart and Vascular Center will be something I will definitely carry into my professional career as a valuable asset.

To the very end, this rotation can make you an all rounder and it might be the best exposure to US health system under the great mentorship of Dr Usman khan. I can say it is friendly, with very good environment and with amazing people from all over the world.
