I had the incredible opportunity to complete my clinical rotation under the guidance of Dr. Usman Khan. This experience marked my introduction to the intricate US healthcare system, and I couldn’t have asked for a more supportive and knowledgeable mentor than Dr. Khan.
From day one, Dr. Khan exhibited unwavering patience and dedication to my learning experience. He was always available to answer my questions, no matter how basic or complex they were. Dr. Khan’s commitment to teaching and his willingness to share his wealth of knowledge made this rotation immensely valuable.
During my time at the Center, I was exposed to a wide array of medical practices and procedures. I learned how to effectively take a patient’s history, even when language barriers necessitated the use of interpreters. I became proficient in navigating and documenting patient information in the Electronic Medical Record (EMR) system, a fundamental skill in the modern healthcare landscape.
One of the highlights of my rotation was witnessing various procedures including Varithena, Venaseal and Venous ablations and many diagnostic tests like ECHO, stress EKG, Holter EKG, SPECT and lower limb ultrasounds. These experiences broadened my understanding of cardiovascular health and the importance of diagnostic accuracy in patient care.
Dr. Khan generously allowed me to shadow him in the catheterization lab, where I observed left and right heart catheter procedures. This inpatient and outpatient experience was invaluable and deepened my appreciation for the intricacies of interventional cardiology.
Additionally, I had the privilege of witnessing Dr. Khan’s remarkable expertise in managing a patient in the emergency department who was diagnosed with NSTEMI (Non-ST-Elevation Myocardial Infarction). His clinical acumen and compassionate care left an indelible impression on me, reaffirming my aspiration to excel in the medical field.
Moreover, I had the opportunity to present a topic “Complete Revascularization and Angina-Related Health Status in the ISCHEMIA Trial” from the journal of the American College of Cardiology, this experience enhanced my knowledge and sharpened my presentations skills.
I extend my heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Usman Khan for his unwavering support, mentorship, and the invaluable knowledge he imparted during my clinical rotation. I wholeheartedly recommend this rotation with Dr. Khan to any medical student who seeks to embark on their journey within the US healthcare system. It has been a transformative experience that has not only expanded my medical knowledge but has also instilled in me a profound respect for the art and science of medicine as practiced in the United States. Thank you, Dr. Khan, for being a guiding light in my medical education.
