It’s been a privilege to have an observer ship under Dr. Khan at Epic Heart and Vascular Institute and HCA Houston. It was a diverse and enriching experience, during which I had the opportunity of remarkable learning which enhances my medical knowledge and skills that will undoubtedly shape my future as a healthcare professional. Dr. Khan is very professional and embarks on astonishing clinical skills. He made sure every student should get equal opportunity, whether it was working with his team, Clinical procedure, or Inpatient procedures.
Under Dr. Khan, I had the opportunity to engage actively in patient care, taking detailed notes and access to the EMR system, which allowed me to develop my clinical skills, enhance my medical knowledge, and practice effective communication with patients. Dr. Khan’s guidance and expertise in the diagnostic process were invaluable, highlighting the importance of concise and accurate patient reporting. One significant aspect of my rotation was the exposure to electronic medical records (EMR). Accurately recording patients’ notes in the EMR system underscored the importance of organized and comprehensive medical records for continuity of care and effective communication among healthcare providers.
The most remarkable experiences during my rotation were in the catheterization laboratory (Cath lab). @ HCA Houston, and observing RCA angioplasty, and IABP removal during IN patient experience. Witnessing critical cases and various interventional techniques during hospital rounds was a great experience. I observed many outpatients’ vascular procedures like RFA, Varithena, and Vennaseal. Dr. Khan helped us understand the importance of interventional cardiology in acute cardiac care.
Dr. Khan involved all externs in scholarly activities as well, during those hours we learned EKG interpretation, and how to read stress echo, enhancing my skills in identifying cardiac abnormalities and developing a systematic approach to EKG interpretation. we were regularly involved in presenting published research papers from renowned journals with respective question-and-answer sessions. I Had a chance to present a paper on effects of salt restriction and Heart failure. Additionally, we gained access to observe stress echo, Doppler echocardiograms, and nuclear perfusion tests, arterial and venous Doppler US.
Beyond the clinical experiences, the daily attendance and interaction with colleagues fostered a collaborative and supportive environment. Building friendships with fellow healthcare professionals and staff members enriched my experience, creating a sense of camaraderie and shared learning. To sum up, my time at the Epic Heart and Vascular Center during my clinical rotation with Dr. Usman Khan greatly impacted my medical understanding, practical abilities, and professional relationships.
The experiences I encountered while on rotation reinforced my fervor for cardiology and reinforced my commitment to delivering empathetic, evidence-based care to my future patients. I am extremely thankful for the extensive education and exceptional guidance I obtained at the Epic Heart and Vascular Center. I strongly advise anyone seeking a transformative learning experience in the realm of cardiology to consider this clinical rotation.
